Whitefish Whiteout Mountaineering Race - January 23, 2010
DESCRIPTION (registration form attached at bottom):
On January 23rd (24th will serve as a weather date in case there is avalanche control work needed the morning of the 23rd) Whitefish Mountain Resort hosts it’s third annual Ski Mountaineering event - the Whitefish Whiteout. The Whitefish Whiteout is a race in the European randonee tradition. Competitors will skin up the slopes of Whitefish Mountain Resort, remove their skins and descend the most challenging terrain that conditions permit. The course will take competitors on an up and down route throughout Whitefish Mountain Resort.
The Whitefish Whiteout is part of the national US Ski Mountaineering series and open to AT/ Touring, telemark skiers or split board snowboarders with a mens and womens category and Recreational course and Race Course category for each discipline.
The ‘Race’ category course will include between 3-4 ascents and descents - total vertical will be approximately 4,000 ft. The ‘Recreation’ course will include at least two ascents and descents with approximately 2,000 ft. of vertical climbing. The Whiteout is a backcountry ski mountaineering race (within the resort permit area) and as such, requires all participants to wear a helmet and carry a beacon, shovel and probe.
Start time is 8:30 AM at the Chair One Plaza. Please be there a in plenty of time to register.
For a 50$ entry fee ($30 for the recreation course) competitors receive a various swag and tshirts, plus a chance to win cash, prizes and measure up against some of the best endurance athletes in the nation, and in the valley. Race updates and additional information will be available at www.USSMA.org or www.cosmicski.com .
Whiteout gives new meaning to “Earn your turns!” The race route will be announced and will be adjusted per snow conditions on race day. Come join the fun and see how fast you can get up and down and around the mountain.

Likely Course Selection - Both courses take Toni Matt to the Summit, and finish with Connie’s Coulee, Glory Hole, Hell’s Traverse, and ascend up Purgatory and down Woodlot. The ‘Race’ course adds in Inspiration to Faults to Haskill Slide, over to MoeMentum, up North Bowl Face, Down East Rim to Whitey’s, boot pack up N.B.C. and back to the summit where it will piece back into the rec course in Connie’s Coulee. Course is marked with bamboo and high visibility tapes, and we encourage you to call 862.2910 for course questions. It will be lightly marked by thrrsday of race week.
SCHEDULE:
Early Registration- Ends January 22 at noon at Baselodge info center (or register at www.active.com ) - Come by the Events and Recreation to have any and all questions answered about the event, course, times, etc. Events office is located in the Upper Village across from the Alpinglow (the green building, ground floor). Entries accepted at Baselodge tickets through noon, but attendants may not know course details so please come by the events office or call.

Registration starts at 7:15am at the Chair One Plaza area. just follow the music...
Early start, time 8:30 am.
Awards - 1pm (or 1 Hour after last racer crosses the finish) at Ed and Mully’s Lounge in the village area.
Weather Day - January 25 - Weather day only if avalanche control work is needed 1/24.
FEES: $50 for ‘Race’ Category, and $30 for shorter ‘Recreation’ Course. Each Racer receives a shirt, goodie bag, and a strong likelihood of winning some swag at awards (even if you didnt win the race).
