The Five Peaks
February 22nd UPDATE: We've made a slight change to the Peak 7 climb - it now ascends Art's Bowl to the rope line and continues along the northern ski area boundary to the summit of Peak 7. The attached map reflects the change.
January 17th UPDATE: Registration is now open via Active.com. We are projecting a field limit of 90 teams, early registration is encouraged.
Welcome to The Five Peaks race site. T5P is North America's longest ski mountaineering race with 10,000 feet of vertical and five separate ascents in the Ten Mile Range behind and in Breckenridge Ski Resort. Eighty teams of two will skin, climb, ski and traverse Peaks 10, 9, 8 (from two sides) and 7. While The Five Peaks course will be demanding in terms of vertical and time, course loops are designed so that teams that don't wish to complete the final climbs will still enjoy a full day of high-alpine skiing. It's the "biggie/must-do” race of the year.
If you're interested in racing The Five Peaks but have never raced a ski mountaineering race it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED that you race at least one of the COSMIC events in Colorado or any of the USSMA events listed.
THE COURSE - See attached map. Due to the high-alpine nature of the course, competitors are required to race as teams of two. In the event of poor weather the event will move to Sunday and/or an alternate course lower on the mountain.
Early on-line registration is recommended. Race entry includes lift ticket (for non-season pass holders), goodie bag, COSMIC Buff, post-race meal and awards ceremony.
Entry fees: $160 per team with season pass, $180 after March 15th. $240 per team without season pass, $260 after March 15th.
- Pre-race packet pick-up and late registration from 5-7 pm on Friday followed by mandatory pre-race meeting at 7 pm, location tbd.
- Weekend lodging and ticket packages will be available to racers and their families.
- Start time 7 am, Peak 9 base area in front of The Maggie next to the Quicksilver Super6 chair.
- Finish at base of Monte Cristo at Peak 7 base area in front of Crystal Peak Lodge. Upon finishing racers will collect their personal bag of warm clothes (transported by race org. from start), and ride the free gondola back into town.
- Required gear: skis/skins/backpack/beacon/shovel/probe/helmet/wind layer/extra gloves/balaclava or Buff. Racers are REQUIRED to attach skis to backpack on the designated bootpack climb in the Lake Chutes area.
- Categories: men duo/ women duo/ mixed duo/ vet men duo (50+) / vet women duo (50+)
- Time cut-offs will be enforced beginning with Peak 8. No racers may start either of the Peak 8 or the Peak 7 climbs later than 2:30. Note that only about a quarter of the teams are expected to make the final Peak 7 climb cut-off. Lightweight gear (AT or tele) and mohair skins are strongly recommended due to the duration and demands of the course. Time cut-offs are designed to get racers to the finish and a well-deserved beer and a meal!
- Post race banquet starts at 6 pm in Breckenridge with awards at 7:45.
- T5P is promoted by the COSMIC Series and the Greenspeed Project in cooperation with the US Forest Service and Breckenridge Ski Resort.
