San Juans Rando
2009 RESULTS ATTACHED AT BOTTOM
The San Juans Rando event is hosted by Pine Needle Mountaineering in Durango and Silverton Powdercats. This event will be the first ski mountaineering event in North America held entirely in the backcountry.
The course starts and finishes on the west side of Molas Pass. Multiple courses have been mapped and skied; in the event of high avalanche danger or poor visibility alternate, the below tree-line course will be used.
Start: 9 am, with a pre-race briefing on the starting line at 8:45 am. Directions to start:
Start area is located on highway 550 at the 65 mile marker. There is a green sign that reads Molas lake trail, turn at the sign.
Start location is six miles south of Silverton, heading towards Durango. If coming from Durango or Durango Mountain Resort you will go one mile past the top of Molas pass and you’re there.
If coming from Telluride take the highway to Ridgeway, then head towards Ouray and over Red Mountain Pass to Silverton. Do not turn into Silverton, keep heading towards Durango.
Registration and Info: Friday, April 17th at Pine Needle Mountaineering from 4-7 pm. Morning-of registration from 7:30 - 8:30 am in the Silverton Powdercats parking lot on the East side of the highway, see directions to start
Mandatory Gear: beacon/shovel/probe/helmet
*If conditions are favorable, the Race and Heavy Metal course will include a fixed-line protected, non-technical boot pack. A harness with single via ferrata set-up (sling girth-hitched to harness and single carabiner) will be required. If you need a harness please email ussmaski@gmail. com to reserve a CAMP harness for the event.
$40 entry includes postrace bbq and prize raffle.
Categories: Race / Heavy Metal / Vet (vertical of 4,500-5,500), Recreation category course does not require a harness and climbs 2,500 ft.
